So you want to upgrade your E46 M3!
The BMW E46 M3 provides an exceptionally capable platform for track day and motorsport use, but extracting its full potential requires more than simply fitting a collection of performance parts. A properly developed E46 M3 chassis relies on suspension, geometry, braking, tyres and vehicle setup working together as a complete package. This BMW E46 M3 upgrade guide explores the key areas that influence chassis performance, giving drivers and builders a clearer understanding of where to focus when developing an E46 M3 for serious track use.
We’ll look in detail at BMW E46 M3 suspension upgrades, adjustable front and rear kinematics, camber, caster, toe and wheel alignment, alongside E46 M3 brake upgrades, brake cooling, wheel and track tyre setups and other important chassis considerations. Particular attention is given to improving suspension geometry and maintaining control of alignment throughout the suspension’s range of movement — areas that become increasingly important as grip levels, cornering loads and vehicle performance increase. The objective is to create a balanced, predictable and adjustable E46 M3 that gives the driver confidence while providing the setup range required to optimise the car for different circuits, tyres and conditions.
Front Subframe
The front subframe and kinematics is fairly simplistic on the E46 M3. The front "lollipop" bushings are a known weak spot on the front end. the standard item is a rubber bushing that can make turn-in feel vague and not confidence inspiring. The obvious choices are either the Bimmerworld or Millway lollipop bushings, we have sold both of these to racers and track day warriors alike and the consensus is clear. These bushings remove the slop from the front end and enhance turn in as well as maintaining geometry under load.

Rear Subframe
You will probably know already but the rear subframe, more specifically the mounting points are notorious on the E46. It is recommended that the subframe is dropped and the mounting points inspected and reinforced with steel plates. Before reinstallation of the subframe its important to replace the subframe and differential bushings. For fast road cars, polyurathane bushings are enough but if you are ever looking to track the car, solid bushings are recommended.

Rear Arms and Bushings
BMW carried over most of the rear end setup from the E36 to the E46. This simple setup consisted of a trailing arm and two control arms attaching the upright/rear trailing arm to the rear subframe. The engineers opted for eccentric bolts on the arms to adjust camber and the trailing arm bracket had elongated holes to adjust toe. The standard toe adjustment tends to be more than enough for most E46 applications but the level of camber adjustment is not enough with the standard arms and eccentric bolts.
Camber adjustment can be increased by installing an aftermarket lower camber arm. This removes the flimsy pressed steel OEM component with an aluminium arm that has more range of camber adjustment.
The upper arm which also doubles as the lower spring perch can be swapped out for a camber arm similar to the aftermarket lowers. This is only suitable for cars running a true coil over damper rear suspension as it deletes the spring perch. If you are running a rear anti roll bar you need to run the Millway upper arm as it has provision for the drop link. If you delete the rear anti roll bar you can run the VAC upper arm.
We strongly recommend that the trailing arm bushing is swapped out for a precision bearing. The standard item is rubber and deforms under load which knocks the toe adjustment out giving the feeling of the rear end being disconnected from the chassis. Solid precision bearings are a must to maintain geometry mid corner.
